13 Rulers of the Nilgiris

India was ruled by many Kings over a very long period of time and people of India have witnessed many Kingdoms and Empires. These Kingdoms and Empires have created their own traditions and identities to our country. It is indeed very much fascinating to know about our own history.

Here is the list of 13 Rulers who have ruled our Nilgiris from 12th century till the British Raj.

KAALA RAJA    
                                                                                  
From somewhere around 980 till 1116 AD, Kaala Raja ruled Nilgiris from the area of Kookal. Badaga legends considered him to be the first Badaga King.

VISHNU VARDHAN

The Hoysala King Vishnu Vardhan defeated Kaala Raja in a battle of Kookal and conquered the Nilgiris. He ruled the Nilgiris from 1116 – 1152 AD.


VEERA BALLADA III

One of the greatest Kings of Southern India who controlled most parts of southern Mysore region from 1292 – 1343 AD.

MADHAVA DANNAYAKA

He was known as “Subduer of the Nilgiris”. He actively ruled the Nilgiris from 1310 – 1318 AD.

HARIHARA RAYA I

Harihara Raya I was the founder of the Vijaynagara Empire. He was the eldest son of Bhavana Sangama and was the founder of Sangama dynasty. He ruled for almost 20 years i.e. from 1336 – 1356 AD.


BUKKA RAYA I

Bukka Raya I, the brother of Harihara Raya I was an emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire from the Sangama dynasty. He ruled the Nilgiris during the period 1356 – 1377 AD.


KRISHNA DEVA RAYA

Krishna Deva Raya was the most powerful of all the Hindu rulers of India. He earned the titles “Lord of the Kannada empire” & “King of three Kings”. His period of rule was between 1409 – 1529 AD.

 

UMMATTUR RAYAS

He was the first ruler who exploited most of the wealth of the Nilgiris. He constructed many forts along the borders of Nilgiris. His kingdom’s influence was spread for almost 200 years i.e. from 1400 – 1610 AD.


KRISHNA RAJA WODEYAR I

Nilgiris came under the control of Wodeyar kings of Mysore from 1610 to 1760.  He became the king of Mysore at the age of 10, but he died at the age of 29, in 1732. During his lifetime, he also ruled Nilgiris.


HYDER ALI

Hyder Ali was a general in Krishnaraj Wodeyar II ’s army. He was the Sultan and de facto ruler of the kingdom of Mysore. Nilgiris was under his rule until his death in the year 1782 AD.


TIPU SULTAN

Tipu sultan inherited Nilgiris after his father Hyder Ali's death. He is also known as Tiger of Mysore.


PADHA RAJA III - 1800 AD

Padha Raja III was the Maniagar of  Thothanadu Thuneri village. He held the hereditary title of  “The Chieftain of Badagas.’’

JOHN SULLIVAN

John Sullivan was the collector of Coimbatore in 1817 under British rule. He was known as the founder of the modern town of Ootacamund.
